Meet HERO

Update 7/9: Hero recently went on overnight with volunteer that knows him well. Notes from his sleepover: `He was the perfect houseguest and a joy to have around. We spent 24 hours together lounging outside and on the couch, we danced in the kitchen, went on a pack walk with another VCAS foster dog. No accidents, polite manners in the home. He learned that he loves the couch and would `herd` me to come lay down with him. He followed me everywhere in an endearing way and found any excuse to nuzzle in for pets. He really enjoys plush squeaky toys. I brushed him with a waterless shampoo and he got a little excited and wiggly! I would take him for another sleepover any chance I get.` Update 3/11: This dog has shown great improvement since his intial impound. We found out more about him from his previous owners. They had to surrender due to moving out of the country, but had tried to find family or friends to take care of them but were not able to. He came in with another dog, a small dog (terrier/shih tzu mix) who the owners had hoped would stay together as they described them as good friends that enjoyed running around outside together, very friendly, and listened to directions well. The little dog has found a loving adopter, but this dog is still waiting. He has done well meeting other large dogs here at the shelter, and his owner said he did well with large or small dogs. So he may make a good match with another pet at home. He has been mostly an outside dog, and his owners said he would chew through leashes and didn't like to load up in vehicles, but our volunteers are getting to work on helping him overcome his fears about it, and there are plenty of ways for a new adopter to help work through this too! 3/3: This dog is on our Call to Action list due to challenging behaviors when impounding such as thrashing, rolling, and repeated attempts to bite an Animal Control Officer. We are evaluating whether or not this dog is able to be safely handled.
