Meet Dante

Meet Dante, the handsome malamute mix. Dante arrived to the Shelter after a previous guardian left him and another dog behind. A roommate brought them to the Shelter for safety as they were unable to care for them long term. Dante is a fluffy guy who hasn’t has the best husbandry – arrived to the Shelter with matting and a dirty coat. He was observed to be friendly and goofy – seeking interaction from people. Dante may need some patience when transitioning to the new home to learn the daily routine and bond with his people. Typical to Nordic breeds – Dante does have a bit of wanderlust. He should be securely on leash or supervised if out in an enclosed yard to ensure he does not go off to find his own fun. He has lived with another dog previously (female, similar beed). When meeting dogs at the Shelter, Dante has been a bit hormonally influenced. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Not every dog may appreciate Dante’s current mounting strategy so adopters may need to manage interactions as Dante learns that that is not the most polite way to make dog friends. We do not have history of Dante with children or cats. Dante is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
