Meet Maya

Meet Maya, the Pyrenees breed mix. Maya originally came into the Shelter as an owner surrender. She was indoors only and enjoyed sleeping on the couch. She lived in a home with young children (as young as 2 years old). She enjoyed going for walks in her home. Maya spent a few months in an adoptive home that, ultimately, was not the best fit. Maya is looking for a dog-savvy adopter that will give her the time and patience to transition to her adoptive home. She can be stoic and reserved when first meeting people but after some time, softens into a bubbly, playful gal. Maya would thrive with an engaging adopter who will provide her mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Maya enjoys the company of other dogs but, typically to livestock guardian breeds, can be reactive at barriers or on her person’s property. Adopters should plan to do some breed research to ensure that they have the resources to care for Maya. A home free of young children and small animals (rabbits, felines) is required as Maya can be a bit of an exuberant gal when she is excited and has demonstrated some prey drive in a prior home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
