Meet Nike

Meet Nike! Some dogs are naturally timid or shy, while others may not have learned to trust people. These dogs need to feel safe before they will interact with people; the work to build a relationship of trust could be a long and hard one but the experience can be one of the most rewarding of dog ownership. ‘Chicken Little Dogs’ like Nike are fearful of new people and places, take time to trust, shut down here at the shelter, and will bite if people push or try to interact too quickly. However, once they trust a person, they often become very bonded. We believe Nike would do best as an only dog. Nike sniffed another dog without any fuss, but was anxious. He might do well with another mellow, well-socialized dog who will give him the space and time he needs without insisting on playtime, but Nike will need to meet any dog he may live with, and a slow integration using baby gates and separate areas would help set everyone up for success. Nike will thrive with someone who has experience with positive reinforcement, or the willingness to learn. Nike will need ample time to decompress in a new environment over several weeks, and help him feel safe by letting him approach and set the pace. Previous experience with nervous/shut down dogs is ideal, but recognizing a dog’s need to go slowly without pressure will go a long way in helping Nike learn he is safe as he slowly explores and acclimates to his new home. High pitched noises, flailing hands, and sudden movements will scare Nike. Nice is also VERY head-shy, wary of hands, and dislikes his tail being touched. An older child (15+) who is respectful and able to give a dog space will be the best fit. Minors and dogs should always be actively supervised for everyone's comfort and safety. It took a bit for Nike to feel comfortable with a leash/harness, but he began exploring the outdoor kennels while outside. Once decompressed and relaxed in a new home, over several weeks, he may discover enthusiasm for toys with his person’s encouragement. A combination of regular exercise combined with mental enrichment such as food puzzles, sniffing time, games, and learning new tricks, will help meet his needs and build confidence. Nike’s vet and grooming needs are both routine. Please come meet this cutie on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday from 12N-3:30, or Saturdays by appointment. LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement will help Nike learn new skills and fun tricks while building confidence and forming a bond with his with his guardian. [Moderate/Ongoing]
