Meet Winnie

Meet Winnie, a tiny 7-pound Chihuahua with a tender heart and a whole lot of feelings. At 2 years old, Winnie is a nervous little girl who needs a patient, understanding person willing to let her learn that the world can be a safe place. Winnie takes time to trust people, and she isn't the kind of dog who will immediately run up asking for attention. She can be easily startled and retreats when she feels unsure, so she needs an adopter who will respect her boundaries and never rush her. Being picked up is particularly scary for Winnie, and while she may tolerate it if necessary, she is much happier when all four tiny feet stay on the ground. She needs someone who understands that her quirks are part of who she is and is willing to work at her pace. But underneath that nervous exterior is a very sweet girl who desperately wants to love and trust her people. Food is definitely the way to Winnie's heart, and she'll gently take treats right from your hand. Once she feels comfortable with you, she'll happily snuggle beside you on the couch, enjoy some gentle pets, and burrow under a blanket like the tiniest little burrito. She also loves chewing on bones, playing with other small dogs, and simply hanging out at home with her people. Winnie is housetrained and, once she's comfortable, is a pretty easygoing little companion. She would do best in a quiet home with few visitors and people who understand that trust takes time. A secure fenced yard is required because Winnie will run if she becomes frightened. Another small, friendly dog would be a wonderful companion for her and may help her feel more secure. Winnie isn't looking for someone who expects her to become a confident little social butterfly overnight. She's looking for someone who will celebrate the tiny victories: the first time she approaches without being called, the first couch cuddle, the first time she chooses to stay instead of running away. With patience, kindness, consistency, and time, we believe Winnie can continue discovering just how wonderful it feels to be loved. Her minimum adoption fee is $300 plus a $15 fee, if 4 months or older, for rabies registration for McLean County residents. She has been spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm checked, dewormed, and is on flea and heartworm preventatives.
