Adopt a pet for $70 or less at Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter through July 26

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter in Newport News is taking part in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters campaign, offering reduced adoption fees from July 5 through July 26. The move is intended to help shelters dealing with crowding by making it easier for people to take animals into homes during the three-week promotion. Under the sponsorship, the Bissell Pet Foundation is contributing $20 toward each dog adoption and $10 toward each cat adoption, which reduces the out‑of‑pocket cost for adopters. During the event the shelter’s fees are set as follows: adult dogs (at least 1 year old and over 30 pounds) have a $30 fee; small dogs and puppies (under 1 year old and/or 30 pounds and under) are $70; adult cats (1 year and older) are $40. Senior animals—both dogs and cats age 8 and up—are available with no adoption fee. The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter serves Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County in partnership, and the facility is operated by the City of Newport News for those four jurisdictions. Its day‑to‑day work includes reuniting lost pets with owners, finding new homes for owner‑surrendered animals, and arranging adoptions. This temporary fee reduction creates an especially good opportunity to consider senior pets, who are being waived from adoption fees, as well as puppies and smaller dogs that fall under the $70 price point. The shelter hopes the sponsored adoptions will ease capacity pressures while connecting animals with families. If you’re interested in adopting, fostering, or learning more about available animals and the adoption process, contact the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter or visit its website for current listings and instructions on next steps.
