About adopting a Basset Hound
Low, long, and heavy-boned, the Basset Hound was built to follow rabbit scent slowly enough for hunters on foot to keep up. That job gave it a nose second only to the Bloodhound, a stubborn streak, and a gentle, easygoing nature. Bassets show up in shelters as strays picked up while following a smell, and as surrenders from homes that could not manage the drool, the shedding, or the weight gain.
Bassets are calm indoors and mild with children and other dogs. They need daily walks to keep weight off, but they are not runners and their backs do not tolerate stairs or jumping well. Training takes patience because a Basset works for itself. Puppies are clumsy and chew. Adults are usually settled and sweet but may need to learn recall, which the breed resists.
Backs, ears, eyes, weight, and bloat are the topics to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about. The long ears need cleaning often, and the loose skin traps dirt. They bay when bored or when a scent excites them. Homes with a fenced yard, a tolerance for slobber, and a slow pace suit them. Are Basset Hounds good with kids?
Generally yes. Bassets are patient, mellow, and tolerant of noise and clumsy handling. They are heavy enough that a child cannot easily hurt them. Their long ears and back should be protected from pulling and jumping. Ask the shelter whether this dog has lived with children.
Are Basset Hounds hard to train?
