About adopting a Bulldog
On a shelter card, "Bulldog" rarely means a registered English Bulldog. Staff use it for any stocky dog with a wide chest, short muzzle, and heavy jaw, which can include American Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, bully-type mixes, and dogs that are mostly pit bull terrier. The label describes a shape, not a lineage, and two dogs listed as Bulldog can differ enormously in size, energy, and health.
English-type dogs tend to be low-energy, snorting, and happiest indoors near a person. American-type dogs are taller, more athletic, and need real exercise and training. Mixes land anywhere in between. Puppies of any of these types are strong-willed and benefit from early, gentle structure. Adults are often already settled and easier to read.
Breathing, skin folds, hips, and heat tolerance are the questions to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about, especially for the flat-faced types. Behavior varies too much across the label to predict, so watch how the dog moves, breathes, and greets you rather than relying on the word.
