About adopting a Pointer
"Pointer" on a shelter listing usually means a lean, athletic dog with a deep chest and a bird-dog look, and it can cover English Pointers, German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, and a range of hunting-dog mixes. Shelters in hunting regions see many of them, often dogs that did not work out in the field or were left behind at the end of a season.
The label predicts energy and drive. Pointers were built to run all day looking for birds, and a young one in a home without an outlet becomes frantic. Long runs, hiking, and scent work help enormously. Puppies are affectionate and wild. Adults from hunting kennels may be house trained to a kennel but not to a living room, and some have never climbed stairs or seen a television.
What the label cannot predict is the individual's tolerance for cats, small dogs, or being alone. Most Pointers are gentle and people-oriented, and many are quite soft, shutting down under harsh handling. Hips, skin, and bloat are the topics to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about. Ask the shelter or rescue what this dog has actually done, whether he has lived indoors, and what training he has had so far.

What does "Pointer" mean on a shelter listing?

How much exercise does a Pointer need?
