Deaf and Disabled Senior Dog Rescued After Missing for Weeks

A Greenville, North Carolina family spent nearly three weeks searching for their senior dog before getting the call they had feared might never come: 15-year-old Lucy had been found alive. The disappearance left her guardians anxious as time passed, and the story was reported on May 26, 2026. Lucy was discovered in a roadside ditch, soaked and very cold after exposure to water. Her condition had progressed to hypothermia, and rescuers were particularly concerned because Lucy is deaf and partially blind, making her especially vulnerable while alone outdoors. Officers Ormond and Landry of Greenville Animal Protective Services located Lucy, pulled her from the ditch, and rushed her into veterinary care so she could receive urgent treatment for her exposure and hypothermia. Not long after the rescue and treatment began, Lucy’s family was notified and were able to bring her home. Her guardian Jamie Hancock left work immediately when he learned she had been found, describing the reunion as an overwhelmingly joyful moment. Lady Freethinker reported on the rescue and shared that Lucy is back with her family, expressing gratitude to the officers and everyone involved in bringing this senior dog to safety.
