Dog Given 6 Months To Live Is 'Reverse Aging' Thanks To Weekly Ice Cream

Edward showed up at a Maryland shelter as a stray and staff quickly noticed he was in rough shape: wobbly, dragging his hind legs and with very limited mobility. Adopt A Homeless Animal Rescue stepped in and prioritized placing him in a foster home, and Lindsay B. — who had fostered before and whose own senior dog had died three months earlier — agreed to bring Edward into her household after meeting him with her two young children. A veterinary exam revealed Edward was dealing with multiple health problems and he was given a prognosis of roughly six to 12 months to live. Rather than return him, Lindsay’s family took him on as a fospice dog, focused on comfort and quality of life. They began a regimen that included supplements, laser therapy and acupuncture, and the children assembled a bucket list to make the time special. One unexpected joy became a twice-weekly ritual: a pup cup from a Mister Softee truck that visits their neighborhood. Edward learned to recognize the truck’s tune, would wobble to the curb for his treat, and now gets his cup ready by the driver two times a week. Those outings produce the longest, most enthusiastic walks he manages and clearly brighten his days. That initial six- to 12-month estimate has long passed — more than two years later Edward is still going. He has slowed physically but remains lively in spirit: he likes spending time under his favorite tree, coming along on family outings, and greeting new people and dogs. The family officially adopted him a year after he arrived and, while they don’t know how much time he has left, they plan to continue caring for him and giving him as much ice cream as he can enjoy.
