Injured German shepherd gets care through Broward Animal

A male German shepherd named Nico was discovered seriously hurt on a roadway in Pembroke Pines after being dropped from a vehicle. Local responders turned the dog over to Broward County Animal Care for evaluation and treatment. Veterinarians at Broward County Animal Care found Nico had traumatic injuries, tumors, and trouble walking. Given the severity of his condition, staff described his medical outlook as guarded. Because Nico’s needs went beyond routine shelter care, the agency arranged for him to be transferred to Healy Pack Senior GSD Sanctuary, a rescue that specializes in hospice care for older German shepherds. The sanctuary focuses on comfort, dignity and quality of life for dogs with complex, chronic, or terminal conditions. Doug Brightwell, director of Broward County Animal Care, said partnering with a trusted rescue that could provide this level of care made it possible to give Nico a more compassionate outcome. Broward County Animal Care reiterated that it cares for hundreds of animals each day, many with complicated medical or behavioral needs. Nico is now in the custody of Healy Pack Senior GSD Sanctuary receiving specialized hospice support while his long-term prognosis remains uncertain. The case highlights how shelter-rescue partnerships can provide end-of-life and comfort-focused care for senior and severely injured dogs.
