Cincinnati Animal CARE builds tiny wheelchair from everyday items for kitten in need

Gelato, a kitten with a spinal injury, arrived at Cincinnati Animal CARE needing assistance to move around. Despite his condition, Gelato showed determination to play and walk, prompting Mallory Smith, a veterinary assistant lead, to create a custom mobility device using everyday items like wooden rulers, zip ties, tape, and Hot Wheels. This homemade wheelchair has already helped Gelato start using his legs and standing on his own. Gelato is now in foster care with Mallory while the shelter's medical team continues to care for other animals. Cincinnati Animal CARE, which cares for over 9,000 animals annually, is currently hiring veterinary assistants, a medical scheduler, and a surgery administrative coordinator.
