Family-surrendered senior dog had 24 hours left before a dramatic last-day rescue saved him

Moose is a 12-year-old dachshund mix who was surrendered to Downey Animal Shelter in California on April 25. Shelter volunteer and rescue advocate Nicole Rechtszaid says his family gave him up for reasons that remain unknown, and his physical condition when he arrived suggested prolonged neglect. Rechtszaid reported that Moose had badly worn-down teeth, severe gum disease and areas of hair loss; she suggested the dental wear could mean he had been eating rocks to fill his belly. His case had already generated multiple rescue notices with little public response, and at the overcrowded Downey shelter — where dogs sometimes have only two to four weeks before euthanasia — he was facing being euthanized the next day. A friend finally flagged Moose’s file, and after repeated pleas for help he was picked up from the shelter on May 27 and placed into a foster home. Short videos shared on TikTok documented his rapid improvement: he began running around his foster apartment, relaxing more, and gaining strength after receiving a proper diet and care. Rechtszaid described Moose as a goofy, affectionate dog who enjoys belly rubs and couch time. The online attention from the videos helped build interest in him, and after a final video by Rechtszaid he was sent on to a forever home. Moose’s rescue underscores two persistent problems: crowded shelters and the tendency for senior dogs to be overlooked. A 2021 study in the journal Animals noted that older dogs often have longer shelter stays. Moose’s turnaround came because people saw his story, shared it, and acted quickly — a reminder that sharing and responding to pleas for senior animals can save lives.
