Shelter spotlight
Senior dog ends up back at the same shelter 12 years later, and rescuers refuse to let her story end there

Lola, a senior dog now believed to be about 13 years old, has been welcomed back into rescue care in Texas after turning up at a shelter where records show she once lived in 2014. Her story was posted on social media in May by Caitie's Foster Fam Rescue, which revealed the person who dropped her off had received Lola from another owner and was no longer able to keep her because of medical issues. The rescue placed Lola in a foster home in Houston, where founder Caitlin Evers says the elderly pup is beginning to settle. Volunteers also learned that Lola is heartworm-positive and has a lump on a paw that needs veterinary attention, so she is receiving monitoring and care while out of the shelter environment. Experts say time in a busy shelter can be especially disruptive for older dogs. Published research notes that animals entering shelters often show physiological and behavioral signs of stress — higher stress hormones and behaviors like panting, pacing, and increased vocalization — and that prolonged shelter stays can raise the risk of illness and behavioral decline. Because of that, fostering has become a key tool for improving outcomes. Time in a quiet home allows dogs to decompress, gives rescuers a clearer picture of medical and behavioral needs, and typically makes animals more attractive to adopters. One 2023 study found dogs that spent at least one night in foster care were far more likely to be adopted than dogs that remained only in shelters, and ongoing research is still exploring how long foster stays continue to be helpful. For now, Lola remains in foster care while she gets the medical attention she needs and supporters work to find her a permanent home. Caitie's Foster Fam Rescue has shared her situation publicly to raise awareness, and the broader takeaway is a reminder that fostering or adopting senior dogs can profoundly improve their health and adoption chances.
