Senior dog finds forever home after more than a decade at Humane Society of Odessa

China, a senior dog who spent more than a decade at the Humane Society of Odessa in Odessa, Texas, was adopted this week after watching countless other animals leave the shelter before her. Staff say she finally connected with a couple who decided to give her a permanent home after more than ten years in care. Now settled into her new household, China shares life with another older female dog; the two are described as inseparable and sleep on the bed with their new owners. Senior Kennel Tech Kelly Shannon told reporters China is living her best life since the adoption. Shannon also noted that China’s experience is sadly common: older dogs are often overlooked, and the shelter still houses many senior animals—some who have been there even longer than China—eager for a chance to leave and join a family. One dog the shelter highlighted is Blu, a senior currently living with cancer who remains spirited and hopeful for adoption. Shelter staff say stories like China’s show that senior dogs can thrive in loving homes even late in life. The Humane Society of Odessa is trying to help more dogs find homes through a summer adoption special this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when adoptions are $25. The shelter encourages people to consider adopting or fostering senior dogs, who often need-loving homes and companionship the most.
