Senior Rescue Dog Gets Sweetest & Unexpected Name After Adoption
Yahoo • May 25, 2026
A small animal shelter scene went viral after an Instagram account, @thepuggysmalls, shared the adoption of a senior Pug nicknamed Grandpa. The dog is about 13 years old, and his new family — a woman and a man who appear as his adopters in the clip — take him home from the shelter in a video that captured hearts online. The footage opens with Grandpa asleep in his kennel; he rouses as his new mom opens the door, brightens at the sight of a leash, and willingly settles into her lap. The man who becomes his new dad greets him with a big, emotional hug, and the couple shower him with gentle attention before they leave the shelter. During the car ride Grandpa grows more relaxed, watching the world go by from the backseat. When they arrive at the adopters’ house the woman carries him into the yard to meet the resident dogs. Four dogs rush over to greet him, and he is soon being sniffed and play-chased — even sharing a playful moment with a resident Dachshund — while Dad hands out treats to the assembled pack. The video also notes Grandpa’s health challenges: he is deaf and has kidney issues, but he nevertheless adapts quickly to his new family and surroundings. That resilience and the joyful arrival earned the clip more than 55.4k likes, and the adopters acknowledge he “might not be here long,” but that he is “here for a good time.” Grandpa’s story ends with him settled into a loving home and his remaining years looking much brighter. The adoption serves as a reminder — echoed by the post — that opening your home to an older animal can be deeply rewarding, and that senior dogs are deserving of compassion, comfort, and companionship.
