Shelter Dog Has Sweetest Reaction When Little Girl Returns To Adopt Her

Earlier this month Natalie and her 6-year-old daughter Sage visited an adoption event hosted by Niagara SPCA and Humane Society hoping to find their first family dog. Among the available dogs a brown Labrador mix named Piper — notable for having just one eye — immediately captured Sage’s attention, and the two formed a quick, affectionate bond as Piper eagerly sought her attention. Sage and Piper spent the afternoon playing together, and although Natalie and Sage weren’t ready to decide on the spot because Sage’s dad was away, both mother and daughter left with Piper on their minds. Sage talked about the dog the whole drive home and made clear she wanted Piper to join their family. Once Sage’s dad returned they made an appointment to see Piper again. Even though it was raining when they arrived, Sage rushed to the kennel and Piper responded with joyful enthusiasm, running up to the gate and greeting her as soon as the door opened. The reunion picked up right where the first visit left off, with Piper bounding into the play area and reuniting with the little girl. Sage’s dad quickly fell for Piper as well, the family completed the adoption paperwork, and Piper went home with them that day. It’s been nearly a week since the adoption and the household has been helping Piper adjust to her new life as a house dog. Piper is gradually meeting her new fur-siblings — two cats and a rabbit — and has otherwise settled in well: she sleeps through the night either in the family bed or her own dog bed, enjoys walks, visits to the dog park, and carrying stuffed toys. Natalie says Piper has been a perfect fit for their family and the match with Sage feels very special.
