About adopting a Great Dane
Standing taller than most kitchen counters, the Great Dane is a gentle, sensitive giant that would rather lean on you than guard you. Danes are affectionate, a little goofy, and surprisingly calm indoors. They reach shelters because of size, cost, and housing restrictions rather than temperament.
A Dane puppy grows at an astonishing pace, and that growth needs to be protected. No forced running, no stair marathons, and careful feeding until the skeleton matures. Training should start young, because a dog that pulls or jumps at this size is a genuine safety issue. Adults are usually mellow, content with a couple of moderate walks and a soft bed. They are not built for long runs.
Bloat is the single most important health topic, along with hips, heart conditions, and bone problems, and all of these are things to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about. Danes are sensitive to harsh correction and do best with a calm, steady owner. They need room to turn around, a vehicle they fit in, and a budget for a big dog. Less than most people think, but more than a studio apartment. Danes are calm indoors and spend much of the day lying down, so a modest home works if the dog gets daily walks. What they need is room to stretch out, a bed that fits, and a car that can carry them.
Are Great Danes good with kids?
