About adopting a Pomeranian
The Pomeranian descends from much larger sled dogs of the far north, and it still carries itself like one. Poms are bold, alert, and certain of their own importance, with a plush double coat and a fox-like face. They arrive in shelters from breeder surrenders, owner deaths, and homes that tired of the barking.
Exercise is easy, a short walk and indoor play. Grooming is not. The coat needs brushing several times a week and sheds heavily in season, and shaving it can damage it permanently. Poms bark at nearly anything and are hard to quiet. House training is slow. Puppies are tiny and fragile. Adults are often confident little companions who prefer adults and older children.
Teeth, kneecaps, collapsing trachea, and a hair loss condition are things to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about. They are loyal and playful with their own people and can be snippy with strangers or rough children. Apartment life suits them if neighbors tolerate the voice. Do Pomeranians bark a lot?
