About adopting a Anatolian Shepherd
The Anatolian Shepherd was developed in Turkey to live out with sheep and drive off wolves, and it still thinks like a guardian rather than a pet. It is a huge, quiet, independent dog that watches its territory, makes its own decisions, and does not look to people for direction the way a herding breed would.
These dogs turn up in shelters mostly from rural areas and from owners who wanted a family pet and got a livestock guardian. In a home they are calm and often lazy indoors, but they patrol the yard, bark at night, and treat anything new as a potential threat. Fencing needs to be tall and solid. Puppies are gentle but grow fast, and adolescence brings a testing phase where the dog decides which rules it will follow. Adults from working homes may have never lived indoors.
Hips, elbows, and bloat are matters to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about. They tend to be reserved with strangers and protective of their own animals and people.
