About adopting a Great Pyrenees
Bred to guard sheep alone on mountain slopes, the Great Pyrenees is calm, enormous, and quietly independent, and the young ones that reach rescue are often there because they outgrew a house or barked through the night. This is a livestock guardian, not a herding dog, and it makes decisions on its own.
A Pyrenees puppy grows fast and needs early manners, because a dog this size pulling on a leash is a problem. They tend to be gentle and slow-moving indoors but patrol and bark outdoors, especially after dark, since guarding is their job. Recall is often weak; the breed was developed to disregard commands and protect the flock. Exercise needs are moderate.
Pyrenees are commonly patient with children and other animals they consider theirs, and many do well with cats and livestock. The coat sheds heavily and mats without brushing. A secure fence is essential, since roaming to enlarge their territory is common. Ask the shelter or rescue about the individual dog's history, whether it lived indoors, and what training it has had so far.
