About adopting a Schnauzer
"Schnauzer" on a listing could mean a Miniature, a Standard, a Giant, or a bearded terrier-type mix, and shelters use the single word because the wiry coat, beard, and eyebrows are unmistakable even when size is not. The Miniature is by far the most common, so the label often describes a small, bearded, alert dog, but a Giant listed the same way is a large, powerful working animal.
Across sizes, Schnauzers share intelligence, a strong voice, and a tendency to be suspicious of strangers. Miniatures are lively, bark readily, and enjoy training. Standards are athletic, steady farm dogs. Giants need experienced handling and a job. Puppies of all sizes learn fast. Adults may carry barking or guarding habits that need work.
The wiry coat sheds little but needs clipping or hand stripping on a regular schedule. Pancreatitis, bladder stones, and eye issues are things to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about, especially for Miniatures. Because the label spans such a range, look closely at the size and energy of the dog in front of you. Ask the shelter or rescue how this dog has behaved with visitors and other dogs, and what training he has already had.

What does "Schnauzer" mean on a shelter listing?

Do Schnauzers bark a lot?
