Lawrence Humane Pet of the Week: Meet bashful babies with fee-waived adoptions before Clear the Shelter weekend

The Lawrence Humane Society is hosting a special weekend event to help more animals find their forever homes. From August 28 to August 30, all adoption fees will be waived for dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. This event, known as Clear the Shelter, aims to spotlight animals who have been waiting a long time for a loving home. Elina Alterman, the chief development officer, shared that the shelter staff often get emotional seeing these animals finally get adopted.

During the event, adopters will receive a New Pet Parent Kit, which includes a sample bag of Hill’s Science Diet food. Additionally, on Saturday, adopters will get free leashes, dog collars, and cat carriers. All adoptable animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

To help shy or sensitive animals, the shelter has identified 15 bashful pets whose adoption fees are waived even before the event starts. These pets include Bo and Charli, an inseparable pair of 11-year-old American pit bull mixes; Houston, a 2-year-old Cane Corso mix with a permanent limp; and Snuggie, a 1 1/2-year-old terrier mix who loves carrots and cheese. Other featured pets include dogs like Lacey, Penny, Bolt, and Lady, as well as cats like Peppermint, El Tapo, Simba, Graycie, Selene, and Azula.

The event will take place at the Lawrence Humane Society, located at 1805 E. 19th St. The shelter is open for potential adopters from noon to 6 p.m. every day.
