New York puppies left in dumpster with muzzles wired shut are now ready for adoption

Two puppies, Poppy and Petunia, were found in a dumpster in Queens, New York, with their muzzles wired shut, a cruel act that left them in severe pain and underweight. From there, they were transferred to the Animal Recovery Center at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for further care and rehabilitation.

The case underscores the prevalence of animal abuse in New York City, with dogs accounting for 82% of animal cruelty cases reviewed from 2013 to 2022. The intentional infliction of serious pain on animals can result in felony charges under New York's Buster's Law, with penalties including up to two years in prison and placement on the Animal Abuse Registry. Those convicted are also barred from owning or possessing animals for five years.
