P.A.W.S. adoption event brings puppies closer to forever homes

The Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) hosted an adoption event on August 8 at Pet Valu in Portage la Prairie, aiming to find loving homes for five young dogs. The dogs, ranging in age from three to eight months, included Lulu, a shepherd-husky cross; Tessa, a black shepherd cross; and three shepherd-rottweiler crosses named Rio, Delta, and Luna. These dogs had come into PAWS' care after their previous owners were unable to keep them. Christina Nesbitt, PAWS' fundraising and dog coordinator, highlighted the importance of such events for community engagement and animal adoption.

The adoption process involves meeting the dogs, filling out an application, and providing references. Nesbitt emphasized the commitment required for adopting puppies, who are still learning and need patience and care. While the event focused on the puppies, PAWS also has other animals, including 14 cats, waiting for homes.

Community support is crucial for PAWS, which needs donations of pet food, litter, and toys. Nesbitt encouraged people to share PAWS' social media posts to raise awareness and help find homes for animals. The goal of the event was to adopt out as many dogs as possible and remind the community of PAWS' ongoing need for support. Successful adopters could potentially bring their new pets home within the week.

For those unable to adopt, Nesbitt suggested supporting PAWS through fostering, volunteering, or sharing social media posts. The organization remains committed to helping animals in need and is always looking for new homes and community support.
