The Yorkshire Terrier began as a ratter in English mills and never quite forgot it. Under the silky coat and tiny frame is a bold, opinionated terrier that barks at the mail carrier and bosses dogs far larger than itself. Yorkies arrive in shelters from breeder surrenders, owner illness, and homes that expected a quiet lapdog.
They are portable and need only short walks, which suits apartment life. Barking is the usual complaint, and it can be managed but rarely eliminated. House training is notoriously slow, and many adults come with accidents in their history. The coat needs brushing most days if kept long, or regular clipping if kept short. Puppies are fragile and can be injured by a fall or a careless step.
Teeth, kneecaps, collapsing trachea, and low blood sugar in small puppies are the topics to ask the shelter and your veterinarian about. Yorkies are affectionate and loyal to their people, and they tend to prefer adults or gentle older children over toddlers. Ask the shelter or rescue how this Yorkie has handled other dogs, grooming, and being alone, and what training she has managed so far.

In most ways, yes. They are tiny, need little exercise, and are happy indoors. The exception is barking, which thin walls turn into a neighbor's problem. Training and a calm routine reduce it. Ask the shelter how vocal this particular dog has been while in their care.
With older, careful children, yes. Yorkies are small enough to be hurt by rough play and may snap when frightened or squeezed. Toddlers and Yorkies are a risky combination. Households with calm kids who understand how to handle a small dog tend to do well.
Harder than average. Tiny bladders, a dislike of cold or wet ground, and a stubborn streak slow the process. Many Yorkies do best with a strict schedule and a designated indoor spot as backup. Adults from shelters may need to start over, so ask about their history.
Open any dog's profile to see the shelter or rescue caring for them, then use the adoption link or contact details to apply directly with that organization. Every Dog's Chance simply gathers listings in one place so they're easier to find.
Many Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie dogs — especially adult dogs who are already house-trained — can be a great match for first-time owners. Each dog's profile and the shelter or rescue caring for them can tell you about that dog's individual energy level, training, and personality before you apply.
Adoption fees vary by shelter and rescue, but typically include spay/neuter, vaccinations, and a health check. Open any dog's profile and contact the organization directly for their current fee and what it covers.
It depends on the individual dog more than the breed alone. The shelter or rescue caring for each dog can tell you about their history with kids, cats, and other dogs. Many organizations offer meet-and-greets to make sure the match is right for everyone before you commit.
Many shelters and rescues offer a foster program, sometimes with a foster-to-adopt path. Fostering a Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie gets them out of a kennel and into a calm home, which is a great way to see if the match feels right before committing. Ask the organization on any dog's profile whether fostering is an option.
Most dogs have a brief adjustment period — a few days to a couple of weeks — as they settle into a new home. A consistent routine, a comfortable place to rest, and patience make the transition easier for both of you. The shelter or rescue can tell you what to expect from the specific dog you're adopting.
